Day 10 – Our Best Day Yet & Happy Birthday Irene xxx

My gorgeous cousin Asia picked us up from Arenys for a wonderful day along the coast. If we have not explained already, Asia/Ana Bordas, is my cousin through my Polish family but her father is Spanish, so she is my Polish/Spanish cousin, hence the 2 names. It is her brother Miquel Bordas that we also stayed with in Madrid. Later on in Poland we hope to meet their parents, where they are currently living. Ok, enough of the family tree, back to our beautiful day.

This day was the warmest yet and after our restful escape from Barcelona we were feeling great. Well the day didn’t start quite perfectly…. As we munched on some of the left over Churros from the night before we only realised they were covered in ants once we had scoffed a couple each. Extra protein!

A quick look at the fish market in Arenys and off for a drive to St Pol De Mar. I remembered the village from 15 years ago when Irene and I visited the Bordas family in their family home up in the hills of St Pol. Irene, I thought of you today being in St Pol and also being your birthday. I am often reminiscing about our time in Europe together and will always be grateful for the experiences we shared together.

We started with a walk along the beach and through the quaint streets, stopping for a Bikini ( this is basically a small sandwich). I was so excited to remember the sights of the area, especially as we drove up to where Asia is currently living. She still lives on the property of their family home but the main house is now rented out and she lives on the side. Nina her loyal friend waited patiently for our arrival, Nina showed us around the rabbit and chicken pen. Asia raises rabbits not as pets but to eat. The serenity of this place reminded me of the Dandenong’s (but a few minutes drive to the beach) and I can see why Asia chooses to live here and not in the city. She is a real nature girl and very active with walking, biking (she has about 8 bikes) and dreams of running adventure tours one day.

We drove on from St Pol towards Blanes, bottle of home made wine in hand, cherries to munch on and Nina to keep my feet warm in the back seat. What a coastline! The pictures say it all but having the local knowledge of Asia made it even more enjoyable. Blanes was the destination for lunch. We went to a place well away from the main tourist strip, right on the fishing port. Annie, you went here with Asia as well, do you remember? The meal was awesome, whitebait, mussels, rock salt crusted whole fish, paella, cold meats, dessert, beer and this great feed cost about $40 for the 3 of us. We saw a fish market in action, like a stock market with people bidding for the best price. I could go into more details about the pretty sights etc but I must stop, this was the best day and we thank Asia for taking us around, I am sad we did not stay longer, if we knew we would have given Barcelona a miss and just stayed there.

Trained home for our last night stay in Barcelona, salami and cheese sandwich for dinner at home.

Home made wine in Blanes

Note : This will be the last time we will have access to the internet until we reach San Sebastian. We are in Logrono about to begin our walk along the Camino de Santiago. Wish us luck!
